History:

The history of Rajkot city dates back to the 17th century. The city was established by the then ruler of Sardhar in 1608 A. D. Gradually, it earned the status of a Princely State in the year 1805. Jagat Mandir:
Located on Yagnik Road, Jagat Mandir or Universal Temple is a beautiful temple carved in red stones built in 1934. The temple is dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa and the main shrine or Garbha Griha houses a white marble image of Bhagwan Sri Ramakrishna sitting on a Lotus Vedi. t is a modern structure embodying the spirit of different religions - Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism.

 

Mukti Dham:
Mukti dham is an electric crematorium located in Ramnath para area on the banks of the river Nyari. Mukti Dham has a library which houses books on spiritual and religious topics and can be read by the visitors. It has three Umbrella rest points which shelter the visitors from heat and rain. The pillars of umbrella rest points are decorated with statues of deities. Besides there are paintings and sculptures which depict various mythological events. There are step gardens in Mukti Dham which adds to the beauty of the place with its colourful flowers and tender shrubs.



Raiya Naka and Bedi Naka Gate:
The old fort built by Masum Khan, the Deputy Faudar of Junagadh in 1722 AD in Ramnath para area is in ruins. Only the gates of the fort still remain, of which the Raiya Naka and Bedi Naka were renovated by Sir Robert Bell Booth, the Chief Engineer of a British Agency in 1892. He built the three storied clock tower there.

Ramkrishna Ashram:
Ramkrishna Ashram is the second, most important place for the followers of Swami Vivekananda after Kolkata. It is a branch of Belur Mutt, West Bengal built on the land donated by Late Shri Dharmendrasinhji, the then king of Morbi state. The Ashram has various activities and it strives to teach and spread the gospel of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa. Regular prayers, worships, meditation and religious discourses are held in the Universal Sri Ramakrishna Temple (Jagat Mandir) and people can take part irrespective of caste, creed and religion

Sri Ranchhoddas Ashram
The ashram of Sri Ranchoddas Bapu is situated on the Kuvadava Road. Many believers visit this ashram especially on Thursdays. The ashram is involved in humanitarian activities along with spiritual activities in that it has a charitable trust which runs a hospital for the blind.

Wankaner:
Wankaner located 50 km north of Rajkot was the capital of the former princely state of Wankaner till Indian Independence. In Gujarati "Wanka" means bend and "Ner" means water stream, thus the place derives its name from its geographical location as it is located on the bend of the Machchhu river. The place is an archaeology classroom in itself with palaces and bungalows. Most of the palaces around here have been converted into heritage hotels. The place even has a step well, which was the last one to be built in Gujarat.

 

Matel:
Maa Khodiyar revealed her splendid self at Matel (42kms. from Rajkot) in around 1400A.D. A young innocent shepherd once began to notice an increase in the number of cows that he used to take grazing for fodder. He spotted the cow that didn’t belong to his herd. To discover whose cow it was, he once chased the cow all the way back holding her by her tail.

Chotila Hill:
The famous Chamunda Mataji temple is situated at Chotila, a small town near Rajkot in Gujarat State. Chotila is situated exactly in the middle of Ahmedabad and Rajkot, the two main cities of Gujarat State. Chamunda Mataji is the Kuldevi (family Goddess) of most of the Hindus staying in Saurashtra region of Gujarat State, located in the north of it. The Mataji temple is situated at the top of the Chotila Mountain.Chotila Mountain is around 1250 feet high and is located around 40 miles away from Rajkot, and around 50 miles away from Ahmedabad.

One can easily reach Chotila within one and a half hours from Ahmedabad by the national highway passing through the entire State of Gujarat. As soon as you reach Chotila, you will find a number of shops that sell prasads of Mataji, various types of Gujarati souvenirs like thick bangles with engraving, CDS and DVDS of Chamunda Mataji, and many toys for all ages of children. There are thousands of such shops located at the base of the Chotila hill. You can start your climb from the base after walking some distance. There are stone steps up to the top of the hill. Good tree cover and railings cover the entire walkway providing comfort to all the pilgrims. This destination is most visited during the Navaratri festival.
